The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove program is an initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural communities in Peru. The program was launched to provide households in the region with more efficient and cleaner cookstoves, which reduce the amount of fuelwood needed and cut down on harmful emissions, resulting in improved indoor air quality.

The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove program includes training and education projects for local communities, which are implemented by our local project partners.

The program is certified by the Gold Standard Foundation, which recognizes contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable development in the region. The programme is also standardized by 7 of the Sustainable Goals Development (SDGs):

The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove program is an innovative and effective initiative that addresses the environmental and social challenges facing rural communities in Peru. By promoting sustainable forest management and clean energy use, the program is helping to build a more resilient and sustainable future for these communities.



Project impacts and benefits:
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Qori Q’oncha project co-benefits include improved indoor air quality, reduced health risks associated with smoke inhalation, and increased economic opportunities for women. It also reduces pressure on natural andean forest resources.

Impact on climate: The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove project has a positive impact on climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the distribution of improved cookstoves. Traditional cookstoves, used in rural households in Peru, are often inefficient and burn wood, leading to deforestation and high emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. The improved cookstoves distributed by the project use less fuel and burn more cleanly, reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. The project has been certified by the Gold Standard Foundation, which recognizes its contribution to climate change mitigation.

Impact on community: The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove project has a positive impact on the local community by providing several benefits beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project reduces indoor air pollution, which can cause respiratory illnesses and other health problems. This can lead to improved health outcomes for community members, especially women and children who are most often affected by indoor air pollution. Finally, the project provides economic opportunities for women by providing them additional time for other productive activities aside from cooking.

Impact on biodiversity: The Qori Q’oncha Improved Cookstove project has a positive impact on biodiversity by reducing pressure on natural Andean Forest near rural communities in Peru. By reducing the demand for wood and charcoal as fuel, the project contributes to reducing deforestation and forest degradation, which are major drivers of biodiversity loss.

Here are some results of the programme:

Enabled 141,407 families to gain access to these technologies.
Reduced carbon emissions by more than 2.5 million tonnes of CO2
Reduced an average of 1.9 tonnes in wood consumption, which corresponds to reducing wood consumption by 39% (in Peru).
Saved up to $39 a month in fuel expenditure, or six hours time for wood collection.
A drastic reduction in smoke exposure in 100% of families thanks to the installation of a chimney.
